Swiss chard, figs and homemade pizza oh my!

Yippee!  Sprouts moved in down the road.  I can’t tell you how excited it made me!  When I lived in Addison, everyone thought I was weird because I went to 2 different grocery stores (Wal-mart and Sprouts and sometimes even Albertson’s if they had a good special.)  Back then, I baked an artichoke (which wasn’t worth the hassle), made my own sushi, and even attempted kohlrabi.  Even though I’m a big supporter of eating local, I still like to try things!

Dried Figs

I’ve already been to Sprouts 3 times since they opened 2 weeks ago.  The first week I bought what was on sale because they had some GREAT deals.  In that trip I got figs.  Now I will have to attempt homemade fig newtons.  Yummmmmiiiiieee!

Last time I went, I got everything to make pizza for Super Bowl and some swiss chard.  The pizza was so delish and I’m having it again tonight!  And, last night I sautéed the swiss chard with a little olive oil, garlic and crushed red pepper (which I put on everything by the way) and it was to die for.

What new things have you tried lately?  Did you know that right now in Texas the following fruits and  veggies are growing: Beets, Broccoli, Cabbage, Carrots, Cauliflower, Celery, Grapefruit, Mushrooms, Oranges, Spinach, Sweet Potatoes, Tomatoes?  Try to get out of the apple, orange, banana rut and get something new!  Just look up a recipe online to start and then you can perfect it later on.

I’ve never had Swiss Chard. Just from looking at the picture, do you eat the leafy part or the stalk, or both?

I recently learned how to steam veggies the “real” way (stovetop, not in the microwave) and have done kale, beets, chard, zucchini, baby carrots, onion, etc in varying combinations. So tasty! I don’t even season them at all! It’s my new favorite food. I think I’m going to grill some chicken and shred it into a bowl of steamed veggies. Yuuuum!
